The bar — axial loading

In this section, we consider the most basic structural element — the bar. A bar is a structure which is relatively long compared to its cross-sectional area and is loaded in the axial direction. For the bar, we will introduce important concepts such as external load, sectional force, stress, elongation, deformation, and strain.

Basic concepts

One-dimensional systems of bars

Two-dimensional systems of bars — trusses

Differential equation for axial loading of a bar
